The Art of Solidarity: Musicians from Germany and Japan Perform to Honor Victims of Japan Earthquake

Jun 9, 2011

The Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, was the most powerful known earthquake to have ever hit Japan. In the wake of the tsunami that followed, thousands upon thousands of people - over 24,000 - have lost their lives, their loved ones, and their homes.

The German Consulate General and the Consulate General of Japan organized a concert for the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake on June 9. For this special occasion, artists from Japan and Germany performed to a fully-packed German House auditorium, including a group of students from Japan who lost their parents in the tsunami.

The composer and pianist Satoshi Kanazawa and the Japanese soprano Naoko Nakagawa began the evening with their world premiere "Out Of The Sky," which they dedicated to the earthquake victims. For Mr. Kanazawa, this performance was a particularly personal one, as he himself comes from the Tohoku region, which was greatly affected by the earthquake.

New York-based Japanese jazz pianist Ayako Shirasaki performed her original piece "Far Away." The Hammer Klavier Trio from Germany, currently on tour in New York, also entertained the audience with excellent performances by pianist Boris Netsvetaev, bassist Philipp Steen and drummer Kai Bussenius.

The generous donations received by the audience will be sent to the Japanese Red Cross and Malteser International in Japan, which supports Fujinosono, a home for children and youth from two to 18 years of age in the small city of Ichinoseki, which was heavily damaged by the tsunami.
